Peripartum is a common lifespan event, yet the experiences of autistic individuals during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood are still underexplored. In this discussion, presenters will share insights from both lived experience and professional expertise to help clinicians understand the unique experience of autistic individuals during this transformative period. The session will cover the physical and emotional aspects of peripartum, highlight protective and risk factors, and offer practical guidance for supporting autistic people through this important life stage.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to define the perinatal period and list three considerations working with autistic clients during this time.
Participants will be able to identify and assess for protective factors and risk factors in the perinatal period for autistic clients.
Participants will be able to recognize three physiological factors that can impact the perinatal experience for autistic parents.

She works at the intersection of OCD, complex trauma, perinatal challenges, and neurodivergent identity exploration, providing tailored support to individuals and couples. In addition to her direct practice work, Skylar also works with clinicians through consultation and trainings to increase their competency and confidence in working within the NeuroAffirming Paradigm.

Dr. Kiley Hanish is a neurodivergent occupational therapist specializing in mental health during the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy, postpartum, and perinatal loss. She is also founder and executive director of Return to Zero: HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering hope and healing to those impacted by pregnancy and infant loss.
