Autistic expressions of trauma often differ significantly from those of allistic individuals, leading to unique challenges in assessment and treatment. This presentation will cover key considerations based on survey data and personal experiences as both providers and recipients of care.
Diverse Presentations and Misdiagnosis: Autistic traits like alexithymia, PDA, and sensory sensitivities can result in misdiagnosis, invalidation, and microaggressions from providers and support systems. These experiences can erode trust and lead to treatment aversion.
Impact of Repeated Negative Experiences: Consistent invalidation and misunderstanding can cause emotional shutdown, avoidance of care, and ineffective treatment, ultimately leading to poorer outcomes.
Nervous System Differences in Autistic Individuals: Autistic individuals often experience heightened sympathetic activation and reduced vagal tone, which can intensify trauma symptoms. Recognizing these neurobiological differences is crucial for delivering trauma-informed and affirming care.
By highlighting these considerations, we aim to improve understanding and treatment outcomes for autistic individuals facing trauma.
